There are directions in addition to north, south, east, and west.

The direction of northeast is between north and east. Point to northeast on the lesson diagram.

The direction of southeast is between south and east. Point to southeast on the lesson diagram.

The direction of southwest is between south and west. Point to southwest on the lesson diagram.

The direction of northwest is between north and west. Point to northwest on the lesson diagram.

Stand in your home and face the north. While reciting aloud each direction name, point toward each of the following directions: north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest.

People have made plans of the city, the country, and the whole world. These plans which show the land and water are called maps. On maps, north is usually at the top.

Look at the map of the whole world. How can you tell which part means land and which means water? What direction is at the top of the map, at the bottom, at the right side, at the left side, at the top right corner, at the bottom right corner, at the bottom left corner, and at the top left corner?

Notebook Work: Label the top of your notebook page with "LESSON 13." First, copy the lesson diagram showing north, south, east, and west into your notebook with the "NORTH" pointing toward the top of the page. Add lines to your diagram pointing toward the northeast, the southeast, southwest, and northwest. Mark "NE" for northeast between north and east, "SE" for southeast between south and east, "SW" for southwest between south and west, and "NW" for northwest between north and west.
